5 Ways to Start (or Get Back Into) Your Fitness Routine

Alright, alright. Summer is here in full swing, and I’ve been really trying to take advantage of the warm weather and keep this fitness thing going. After taking nearly a year off from regularly working out, it’s been quite the challenge. My fitness routine crumbled like a piece of pie crust.

But I’m back and ready more now than ever! The beach vacations are awaiting, and to be honest, there’s nothing like a cute swimwear set, cool waves, and R&R to keep you on track to those fitness goals.

Regardless of where you may be on your path, there are a few ways to ease back into or stay aligned with exercising.

Take It Easy

Excitement tends to have it’s way with us in a lot of instances. Working out shouldn’t be one of them. If you’re like me and have gone a while without working out, start at doing it 3 or 4 times a week. Carefully ease into it with shorter sessions or milestones that are attainable, rather than goals that may strain your body. If you’re looking to increase your endurance, set your cardio to 25 minutes and see how your body feels. If you feel confident, increase that time by 10 minutes the next workout day. Listen to your body. Hold on beast mode until it tells you it’s ready.

Be Consistent

Creating a plan is the key to building this habit. If you have workouts planned ahead for every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6pm, you’ll be much more more likely to hold yourself accountable. If you choose to just freelance your workouts, they’ll likely slip through the cracks and won’t be taken seriously. Be consistent about the days and time you’re going to workout, and stick with the plan.

Bring a Friend

It’s 10x easier for me to exercise when I have a friend there to keep me going. ‘Cause truth be told, I’m constantly on the verge of throwing in the towel. If you’re anything like me, making a gym date with a friend is a wonderful route to go. Not only will they be there to be your coach & cheerleader, but it’s a good opportunity to catch up with great conversation. If you’re someone who prefers to workout solo most days but wants to spice it up once or twice a week, consider signing up for a group workout class at your local gym. It’s a good opportunity to interact with others while sculpting your body.

Train in Style

Exercising is one of the best excuses for me to buy a new pair of leggings and feel like I’m channeling my inner yogi. There’s definitely something about new workout clothes that gives me an extra push to go to the gym. Not only do I want to show them off, but most importantly I want to make sure they’re durable and comfortable.

Catch Those Z’s

As we all may know, you won’t have energy unless you get an adequate amount of sleep each night. Sliding back into the workout world requires that you not only maintain a balanced diet but that you sleep enough. Set a regular bedtime and try your hardest to stick to it every night. If you start going to bed and getting up around the same time, you’ll feel more inclined to follow your schedule and tackle your workout.

These are all techniques that have helped me along the way. Best of luck as you go along your way and become your own hashtag body goals!
